300 Cybercabs on Austin streets
Tesla now has 300+ Cybercabs serving riders in Austin, eight times as many as a month ago when the service launched. The figure comes from Tesla’s @robotaxi account this evening, posted with that official clip of the fleet parked in rows.
Texas DMV records back it up. The state register listed 45 Cybercabs at the 3 September launch and 319 after Thursday’s update. Before that update it showed 169. The Model Y count did not move, so every vehicle added was a Cybercab.
319 Cybercabs and 420 Model Ys. More than two in five of Tesla Robotaxi LLC’s Texas fleet is now the car with no wheel.
Every Cybercab is the two-seater built with no steering wheel or pedals. They run alongside those 420 Model Y robotaxis. I am keen to see what 300 cars on the road does to Austin wait times.
The other number on the calendar
NHTSA has opened an audit of how Tesla certified a car with no pedals or steering wheel. An agency memo reportedly gives Tesla until 30 October to answer under oath. The fleet number and the audit are the same story: the car is already in service, and the paperwork is still being asked for.
I posted the official rows, not a cabin tour. If you want the live version, it is still on X.
