The short answer
For most people it is a choice between the two cheapest cars Tesla sells: the Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive sedan and the Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive SUV. Buy the Model 3 if you want the lowest price and the quicker car. Buy the Model Y if you need more cargo space, a higher seat or towing.

Sources, checked 14 Oct 2026: prices, fees and towing from Tesla’s compare page (US). Range, 0–60, charging and cargo for each car from its spec table on Tesla’s own model page: Model 3 (Rear-Wheel Drive), Model Y (Rear-Wheel Drive) and Cybertruck (Dual Motor All-Wheel Drive). All ranges are Tesla’s EPA estimates. Car and Driver reports both entry cars use a 69.5 kWh usable battery and Supercharge at up to 225 kW (Car and Driver).
The Cybertruck is the big step up: a pickup with far more cargo and towing capacity, at roughly twice the price. Model S and Model X were not listed on Tesla’s compare page when we checked.
Trims and range
Above the entry cars, Tesla’s compare page lists these US trims:
- Model 3: Rear-Wheel Drive, Premium Rear-Wheel Drive, Premium All-Wheel Drive, Performance All-Wheel Drive.
- Model Y: Rear-Wheel Drive, All-Wheel Drive, Premium Rear-Wheel Drive, Premium All-Wheel Drive, Performance All-Wheel Drive, plus the Model Y L Premium AWD Launch Series.
- Cybertruck: Dual Motor All-Wheel Drive, Premium All-Wheel Drive, Cyberbeast.
Tesla notes that real-world range varies with speed, weather and elevation. Premium and Performance trims add extra options (wheels, interior) and a longer battery warranty, covered below.
New or used?
A new car gets you the current “Highland” Model 3 or new-shape Model Y and the full new-vehicle warranty. A used Tesla avoids waiting and the early depreciation. Tesla’s own Certified Pre-Owned cars keep the rest of the original 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty, then get an extra 1 year or 10,000 miles of cover, and the balance of the battery and drive-unit warranty still applies. If you buy used privately, check which version it is, how much battery warranty is left and whether any paid driver-assistance package is tied to the car. Source: Tesla warranty page.
US buyers: the federal new and used clean-vehicle tax credits ended for cars acquired after 30 Sept 2025, so don’t count on them. Source: IRS. Check your state, utility or local government for any rebates.
Home charging basics
Charging overnight at home is the cheapest and easiest way to own an EV. Tesla’s US options, per its home charging page (checked 14 Oct 2026):
- Mobile Connector ($300): plugs into a normal outlet for 2–3 miles of range per hour, or up to 30 mph on an existing 240 V outlet your installer approves. No installation needed if the outlet is already there.
- Wall Connector ($585, plus an estimated $750–$1,500 to install): up to 44 miles of range per hour, Wi-Fi, scheduling and charging stats in the app. Covered for 4 years for home use.
- Universal Wall Connector ($660): adds a J1772 plug so it also charges non-Tesla EVs.
Tesla notes the Model 3 RWD and Model Y RWD max out at 32 A, so on those cars both connectors charge at the same top rate. Use a certified installer, plug in every evening and schedule charging for off-peak electricity rates. Your local utility or government may offer charger incentives.
Full Self-Driving (Supervised)
Every current model is listed as “Full Self-Driving (Supervised) capable”. In the US, Tesla offers a 1-month trial, then a $99-a-month subscription. Tesla states the features currently need active driver supervision and do not make the car autonomous, and that availability depends on regulatory approval, which can take longer in some regions. Warranty
- Basic: 4 years or 50,000 miles.
- Battery and drive unit: 8 years with at least 70% battery capacity retained. Mileage cap is 100,000 miles on Model 3 RWD and Model Y RWD/AWD, 120,000 miles on Premium and Performance Model 3/Y, and 150,000 miles on Cybertruck.
- Body rust: 12 years, unlimited miles.

Ordering tips
- Compare the price with destination and order fees: about $1,640 extra on Model 3 and Model Y, and $2,245 on Cybertruck, before taxes.
- Check the trim’s warranty: Premium trims get a longer battery warranty mileage.
- Look at Tesla’s inventory and Certified Pre-Owned cars as well as new orders.
- Confirm what’s included in the configurator (wheels, paint, interior) because the advertised price is for the base car.
