Who it’s for
Model S is Tesla’s long-distance argument: erase fuel stops, keep the sedan proportions, and still have a nuclear option called Plaid. It is not the rational family buy. It is the car for people who measure ownership in highway kilometres and cabin calm.
Drive & handling
Long Range is already quick in traffic; Plaid is the unfair one — launch, roll-on, and a top end that makes other EVs explain themselves. Air suspension and aero do more for real trips than another screen widget. The yoke still polarises; the silence does not.
Cabin & daily use
Wide screen, rear display, and materials that feel a step above the volume cars. Rear seats are fine for adults; the boot is a sedan boot — frunk helps, but this is not a Costco hauler. Parking a large sedan in tight city cores is the tax you pay for the silhouette.
Charging & ownership
Range is the headline and it mostly delivers on mixed highway trips when you drive like a grown-up. Supercharging is the same network story as the rest of the brand; the car’s efficiency at speed is what separates it from heavier SUVs. Price and options put it in a different budget conversation from 3/Y — value is about how you use the miles, not the invoice vs a Model 3.
Software & FSD
Same Autopilot hardware generation story as current volume cars, in a cabin built for long supervised stints. Where FSD Supervised is available, this is a comfortable place to spend hours; where it is not, you are still buying one of the best electric GTs on sale.
Bottom line
Choose S when range and pace are the point. Choose Y when life is the point. Do not buy S to “get more Tesla” — buy it because you specifically want this shape at this speed.
