Shadow Grey Model X Plaid on a city street
Model X — flagship space on S underpinnings.

Verdict

Flagship space with S underpinnings. Buy it for the seats and the statement — not if Model Y already covers your life.

Buy if

You need a real third row, falcon-wing access, and flagship performance in an SUV body.

Skip if

Model Y’s cargo math already works, or you regularly park under low barriers and tight structures.

Who it’s for

Model X is the S platform standing up: three-row capability, theatre doors, and pace that still surprises in an SUV. It is for large households and people who want Tesla software without giving up adult-usable third-row space — and who accept the price and packaging that come with that.

Drive & handling

Heavy, quick, composed. Dual-motor and Plaid variants erase most traffic. You feel the mass in multi-storey car parks more than on the highway. It is not as wieldy as Y; it is in another performance league when you ask for it.

Cabin & daily use

Falcon-wing doors are the party trick and the ownership conversation — brilliant for rear access when you have clearance, awkward when you do not. Second and third rows are why X still exists next to Y. Cargo mode with seats folded is strong; day-to-day the doors and size are the constraints to test before you buy.

Charging & ownership

Expect SUV thirst relative to 3/Y, still competitive for a fast three-row EV. Service and tyre costs sit in flagship territory. The value case is emotional and practical at once: if you need the seats and the brand’s software, alternatives get niche quickly; if you do not need the seats, Y saves a lot of money.

Software & FSD

Same stack, higher seating eye-line. Useful for supervised driving when available. Until then, treat it as a luxury three-row EV with a Tesla brain — the software is shared; the packaging is not.

Bottom line

X is specialisation. Buy it for falcon access and seven-seat reality. Otherwise the Model Y is the clearer family Tesla for most people.
