Dragon Freedom, 237 days
SpaceX’s Dragon Freedom is bringing four astronauts home after 237 days in orbit — about two months longer than the usual six-month space station rotation. It undocked from the International Space Station on Wednesday at 8:05 a.m. ET, 262 miles above northern Cuba.
I keep the clock and the altitude in the first paragraph on purpose. “Crew coming home” is a headline. 237 days is a tour that slipped. Two extra months is the human version of a hold: the vehicle waited, the crew waited, the station kept running.
Dragon is the part of SpaceX that already looks like infrastructure. Starship is the show. This is the bus. When the bus is two months late and still does the job, that is the story I want next to Ship 40 sitting on a deck in Texas.
