Amazon locked Grok Bot out. Shopify just made it one of three AI agents that can pay almost anywhere with Shop Pay
Grok Bot 0.78.1 turns shopping into product cards with a Buy now button and order tracking, and lets you connect Shop Pay as the default way your Bot pays. A day later, Shopify's Fall '26 Edition named Grok Bot as one of three personal AI agents that can use Shop Pay "for brands not on Shopify." About two weeks after users started posting Amazon's "unauthorized AI agent" notice, two of the biggest names in US online shopping are taking opposite positions on AI agents.

What's new in Grok Bot 0.78.1
The official Grok Bot changelog dates version 0.78.1 to 27 Oct 2026 and calls it "Shopping cards and subscription templates." Most of the changes are about shopping:
- Product cards. Shopping results now appear as cards "with photos, rating, price, and store, plus up to two badges such as Top rated." Three or four results scroll in a carousel.
- Buy now, with your approval. On a product page, in-stock options come first, and "Buy now starts an order you approve."
- Order tracking. After an order goes through, the Bot "tracks it and tells you when it ships or arrives," with shipment cards that show the carrier and stage.
- Shop Pay in the Vault. You can "connect Shop Pay in the Vault's Payments tab, then pick it in Pay with or make it the payment method Bots use first."
The same release adds templates for recurring charges. "Find unused subscriptions" cancels plans you pick, "Watch subscription prices" checks renewal prices, and "Try it, don't pay for it" starts a free trial, then cancels it or reminds you before it bills. The changelog says Bots "confirm with you before changing anything."
A note on timing: zakariasson's post says 0.78.1 is "rolling out," so not everyone may have it yet.
What Shopify announced the next day
Shopify published its Fall '26 Edition on 28 Oct 2026. In the section on AI agents, it says Shop Pay checkout is coming to personal AI agents "starting with Muse from Meta, Claude Duet, and Instinct," and adds: "Claude Duet, Grok Bot, and Instinct also offer Shop Pay for brands not on Shopify." The Editions page puts it more broadly: with Shop Pay, "shoppers can buy from any brand on or off Shopify" through those three agents.
That's the key line. Grok Bot is one of three agents Shopify names that can use Shop Pay outside Shopify's own network of stores. It matches Grok Bot's changelog: version 0.75.2, on 22 Oct, said Bots "can pay with Shop Pay, through Shop checkout where a store accepts it and with a one-time Shop card elsewhere."
Shopify's pitch is about who holds the card. The same announcement says "the buyer remains in control of their purchases, and their card is never shared with the agent." For agent purchases at stores off Shopify, it uses tokens from Mastercard, Visa and Discover, with American Express "coming soon." Shopify also lists Grok Bot among nine AI agents its merchant connectors work with. That's the store-owner side, separate from shoppers: it lets merchants manage products and orders from inside the chat.

How this connects to Amazon
On 14 Oct 2026, people on X began posting a notice Amazon was showing them: "Continued access by an unauthorized AI agent violates Amazon's Conditions of Use, to which our customers have agreed." Nic Cruz Patane posted it that night at 11:21pm ET (8:21pm PT), writing that "my bots can no longer access Amazon for orders or anything." Musk quoted his post at 1:24am ET on 15 Oct (10:24pm PT on 14 Oct): "Just ask Grok @Bot to buy what you want someplace else and get a better deal."
The wording matches word for word the notice Amazon showed users of Meta's Muse agent when it cut Muse off on 20 Sep 2026. In a statement to GeekWire about Muse, an Amazon spokesperson said agents buying for customers "should operate openly and respect service provider decisions about whether or not to participate." I couldn't find a public Amazon statement about Grok Bot specifically. So the block is confirmed by what users see, not by Amazon.
The story came back on the evening of 28 Oct. James Douma posted at 10:00pm ET (7:00pm PT): "Amazon locked out my Grok Bot. So it just bought the same thing from a different site (at a lower price)." Musk quoted that post 30 minutes later: "That's what I do too. Just have @Bot buy it somewhere else at a lower price." Lütke replied to Musk six minutes after that.
Two rulebooks, side by side
The two companies' own documents show how far apart they are. Here's how they compare as of 29 Oct 2026:
| Rule | Amazon | Shopify |
|---|---|---|
| Default | Agents must identify themselves "at all times," and Amazon "may limit, including by technical measures," how they get in | "Agentic storefronts is active by default for eligible stores"; merchants can manage which AI channels they sell in |
| Agent duties | Put "Agent/[agent name]" in the user agent, never mimic human keystrokes or solve CAPTCHAs, and don't get around a block | Shoppers connect their agent to Shop; orders show in the merchant's admin "with attribution to the agent" |
| Payment | No payment option for outside agents in the terms | Shop Pay inside agents, with the card "never shared with the agent" |
| Grok Bot | The "unauthorized AI agent" notice has been reported since 14 Oct | Named on 28 Oct as one of three agents with Shop Pay for brands not on Shopify |

How fast Grok Bot's payment options have stacked up
Shopping isn't a side feature for Grok Bot anymore. Here are the main payment steps in the changelog over the last two months:
- 28 Aug: a purchase card shows the amount to Allow or Deny, and Link completes the payment.
- 11 Oct (0.70.2): Bots can pay with X Money or Stripe Link, and check your messages for approval before buying.
- 22 Oct (0.75.2): Bots can pay with Shop Pay, including with a one-time Shop card at stores off Shopify.
- 26 Oct (0.77.0): a Payments tab in the Vault sets the method Bots use first, "and you still approve every purchase."
- 27 Oct (0.78.1): product cards, Buy now, order tracking, and Shop Pay in the Vault.
What's confirmed and what isn't
- Confirmed (shipped): 0.78.1's shopping cards, order tracking and Shop Pay in the Vault are in the official changelog. SpaceXSI's zakariasson says the release is rolling out.
- Confirmed (announced): Shopify lists Grok Bot as offering Shop Pay for brands not on Shopify. American Express support for agent purchases off Shopify is "coming soon," not live.
- Not confirmed by Amazon: any block aimed at Grok Bot specifically. The notice users see matches the one Amazon showed Muse users, but as far as I can find, Amazon hasn't commented publicly on Grok Bot.
- Not a deal: I found nothing describing a formal SpaceXSI–Shopify partnership. All there is so far is Shopify listing Grok Bot in its announcement and Lütke's post.
My read
Amazon's terms treat an AI agent as a guest that has to announce itself and leave when asked. Shopify's treat it as another checkout lane, switched on by default, with the card kept from the agent and the order credited back to the store. For Grok Bot, that lowers the cost of Amazon's block: when Amazon says no, the Bot can buy from another store and pay with Shop Pay, even at stores that aren't on Shopify. Amazon is betting shoppers will come to it directly. Shopify is betting they'll let an agent decide where to buy. The first real test is the holiday season, when this release's subscription templates and the Bot's shopping tools will get their heaviest use. The other thing to watch is whether Amazon signs a deal with any outside agent. Its own example of acceptable agent buying, per GeekWire, was food delivery apps, which take orders with the restaurants' agreement.
