Grok Bot users hit their weekly limits days early, and Musk says serving them cost too much

Paying Grok Bot users found their weekly allowance used up days before the reset. When one asked Elon Musk for a reset on Sunday, he replied that "the cost of serving Grok Bot was unsustainably high relative to revenue." He didn't say whether anyone gets a reset or whether limits will change again.

Post: Elon Musk (@elonmusk), replying to @DogecoinNorway on Sunday, 1 Nov 2026 at 3:34pm ET (12:34pm PT).

What users saw

On Sunday morning at 10:52am ET (7:52am PT), X user @DogecoinNorway posted that his Grok Bot usage was at 100% with four days left before the weekly reset, and that he normally never reaches 100%. Other users replied with similar reports. @Mawam wrote that his usage went from 58% to 100% "in less than an hour with nothing running." @Kosh5959, who said he's on a legacy plan, wrote that he was at 68% one day and woke up to 98%.

At 3:11pm ET (12:11pm PT), @DogecoinNorway asked Musk: "Any chance for a Grok Bot reset, @elonmusk? Lots of people say their usage ran out really fast this week." Musk replied 23 minutes later. His reply, embedded above, had about 6.2 million views as of 4:15am ET on Monday, 2 Nov.

What @grok told users

SpaceXAI hasn't published a statement. Grok's official X account replied to many users overnight. Its replies said:

  • "Usage allocation was adjusted for sustainability," following the cost problem Musk described, and weekly quotas apply across Grok Bot and related features (reply).
  • "No subscription price was raised," though it agreed that "paying the same fee for a smaller usage pool does raise the effective cost per unit of service" (reply).
  • A separate, "temporary billing/usage dashboard issue that caused some false high readings resolved after a few hours" (reply).
  • "Top-ups or higher plans increase the pool" (reply).

These are automated replies, not an official company announcement. They don't say how big the new allowance is.

Why an agent costs more to run

Grok Bot isn't a chat window. According to the official docs, each Bot works on a persistent cloud computer with a browser, filesystem and terminal. It takes on multi-step work across apps and websites, and keeps working when your laptop is closed. A single task can therefore use far more compute than one chat reply.

On SpaceXAI's pricing page (checked 2 Nov 2026), Grok Bot is included in Premium at $30 a month, Super at $100 and Ultra at $200. Those plans carry 4×, 15× and 50× the usage of the $8 Plus plan, which doesn't include Grok Bot. The usage is one weekly pool shared across Grok, Grok Bot and Cursor. When it runs out, you can buy top-ups or wait for the weekly refresh.

Less than three hours after his cost reply, at 6:20pm ET (3:20pm PT), Musk was promoting the product again: "Try Grok @Bot! You will love it. We land a few dozen fixes, features and sometimes powers to Bot 7 days a week and we look at your feedback to make Bot as perfect as possible."

What's confirmed and what isn't

  • Musk: the cost of serving Grok Bot was "unsustainably high relative to revenue."
  • User posts: several subscribers reported hitting or nearing 100% days before their weekly reset.
  • @grok replies: allocation was adjusted, no price was raised, and a separate dashboard glitch was resolved.
  • Not announced: the size of the new allowance, any reset for affected users, or any price change. SpaceXAI hasn't disclosed Grok Bot's costs or revenue.
